Inspiration for the Grid

I saw this in the March 2011 catalogue for the store Anthropologie. Their use of the grid, for the lining up of the numbers and short paragraphs caught my eye. The numbers and combination of them in front of pictures adds interest to the pages. The typeface is simple, classic and refined.

MADE YOU LOOK

Stefan Sagmeister's book, called Made You Look, obviously has some very dynamic typography examples. My favorite part is the sides of the book and how they say different things when you slide it up and down. His use of very simple helvetica style of typefaces and then his own handwriting make the book classic and unique in many ways.

Newspaper grid

In a typography grid book, this example of the use of the grid in newspapers was helpful. This helped me with project two. The text is justified throughout the center and this gives it a clean, well lined up look. The use of headlines breaks up the monotony of the small body copy.

Logo

From Seventeen magazine, an herbal essences logo in an ad. The typeface caught my eye as it is very circular, for example the a. The disconnected strokes were eye catching in the r, n, and e. Especially the r, as it has a dot, resembling an i to me.

great

This ad from a magazine for a restaurant/bar has an interesting use of two different fonts. I think they work well together, with the sans serif font and then the handwritten looking font. The loop on the g is really interesting because its just and oval with a straight connection.

elegant typeface

While looking through a magazine I came across this typeface. First thing I noticed was how delicate it was, compared to other typefaces. It was in a Detroit wedding issue of a magazine, which explains the style. The dot on top of the i has a lot of character, its angle is more oblique, accentuating the i's slanted top. I also like the hairline thin stroke lines with the large rounded finials, as seen on the y. Overall this typeface is elegant and fancy.

Zac Posen letterforms

This logo for fashion designer, Zac Posen is dynamic and eye catching. Besides the fact that color choice emulates a stop sign, the letterforms are really unique. I came across this just in Us Weekly magazine. My favorite part about it is the cross bar of the A going straight across to the Z, it is a great connecting element. The barbs across the letterforms, such as C and S give it a classic and elegant feel.

"bike rack"

The use of letterforms as everyday objects is a cool idea. I read in a typography book that the Salt Lake City library had some inventive uses for letterforms. Their bike rack, uses the letters bike rack. The letterforms are sans-serif and very simple, creating a sleek urban look to the spot.

Miu Miu

Logo for Miu Miu, the high fashion clothing brand. I love the uniqueness. When I was flipping through the magazine, it caught my eye. Its not the typical classic Baskerville logo that many have chosen for logos. The separations of the letterforms create a stencil like quality to the letters.

The Grid

The use of a grid can be seen in this book, The Bridesmaid Guide. It was helpful to look at books and their use of grid systems in making mine. There is a nice flow on the pages.

Unique Vintage Type

This typeface for a vintage Chicago church advertisement is very unique. It has a bit too much decorative feel to it for my taste, with all of the teardrop finials coming off different letterforms. The C really bothers me, because it looks like a lowercase d, or maybe an a. All of the letterforms seem to curve in every direction also which just makes my eye bounce everywhere in chaos. In regards to the color of the first letter, that also throws me off, but may have been necessary to note the beginning of each word, as it is so tightly spaced and decorative.

Kinetic Typography

I came across this video, when looking up this song. It was a really well done kinetic typography video. The way the simple type moves and slants is really interesting and dynamic. The typeface choice was well done as well, it is simple and does not distract from the movement.

Zombieland type

I just remembered that the movie, Zombieland had a really unique use of typography throughout the movie. They list the rules of surviving in a zombie invested land, with 3d type. It pops up throughout the entire movie. I thought it was well thought out and designed, and unexpected in the movie. Here is an example of the first rule and third rule. The type had a very 3d effective, making it humorous in a sense. photo from google images

Hierarchy in an ad

The first thing I noticed about this advertisement poster was hierarchy. I love the western type style for this poster, it goes along really well with the type. The headline's large type size makes you read it first, then it pulls me in and makes me read the dates next, so I know its an event and I want to know more.

Creative type ad

At first glance the organization of this type was messy to me and seemed chaotic but once I began reading it from the beginning I felt it flowed nicely. Even though there are breaks, such as London, Birthday party and thinking that are not in the black, it felt easy to read across as a whole statement.

Movie Poster

The use of image as type was used in this Marilyn Monroe movie poster. I like the use of space, the dress does not seem cluttered but easy to read.

Skating letterforms

This is my alphabet for graphic design for advertising. My theme was ice skating equipment. This project was helpful, even in this class for identifying letterforms. It really made me notice and pay attention to specific parts of each letterform that create its identity.

Advertisment

Typography in a magazine spread
The fact that this type does not need to be legible to create a strong message is really dynamic and interesting. The way the body copy fragments towards the image grabs your attention first, then curiosity forces the viewer to read the headline. Great idea that was executed really well!
